BLOG: Aaron Sims Looks to Next Season

It was a disappointing finish to a great season. Getting swept in the first round by a good Toronto Marlies team left the Admirals reeling and wondering how they could’ve done better. How could they get to those rebounds? Why did they commit so many penalties?

We probably won’t get to those answers. When the season ended in Toronto, the unknown portion of the year started. Who will be back in Milwaukee? Good question.

Here are the contract situations for players who appeared in games for the Admirals this season:

2 D Anthony Bitetto Restricted Free Agent (RFA)

3 D Jonathan Diaby 3-year contract starting in the fall

4 D Scott Ford Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) – AHL contract

5 D Jay Rissling 3-year contract starting in the fall

7 D Joe Piskula UFA

8 F Filip Forsberg 2-years remaining on contract

10 F Patrick Cehlin 1-year remaining on contract

11 F Paul Crowder UFA – AHL contract

12 D Mikko Vainonen 3-year contract starting in the fall

13 F Joe Pendenza Free Agent

15 F Braden Pimm Free Agent

16 F Mathieu Tousignant UFA – AHL contract

17 F Mike Liambas UFA – AHL contract

18 F Colton Sissons 2-years remaining on contract

19 F Calle Jarnkrok 1-year remaining on contract

20 F Miikka Salomaki 2-years remaining on contract

21 F Simon Moser RFA

22 D Scott Valentine RFA

23 D Garrett Noonan 2-year contract beginning in fall

24 F Zach Budish 1-year remaining on contract

25 F Josh Shalla 1-year remaining on contract

29 F Mark Van Guilder 1-year remaining on contract

31 G Marek Mazanec 1-year remaining on contract

33 D Bryan Rodney UFA

36 D Joonas Jarvinen RFA

37 G Scott Darling UFA – AHL contract

41 F Taylor Beck RFA

45 G Magnus Hellberg 1-year remaining on contract

47 F Francis Wathier UFA

51 F Austin Watson 1-year remaining on contract

55 D Charles-Olivier Roussel RFA

74 F Vinny Saponari UFA – AHL contract

88 F Joonas Rask RFA

If you have questions about the difference between restricted and unrestricted free agents click here. Players who are on an AHL deal can sign a NHL deal with any team before the NHL’s free agency period starts in July.

Plus, Kevin Henderson is still under contract with the Nashville Predators for next season. He was loaned to the Texas Stars in exchange for Wathier. Henderson could be back in Milwaukee next season. He has one-year remaining on his contract with Nashville.

Defenseman Taylor Aronson is under contract for next season. He spent the year in Cincinnati (ECHL).

Forwards Brendan Leipsic and Felix Girard never got to Milwaukee this season, but their pro careers will begin next season. Both have three-year deals that begin in the fall.

Of course, trades can occur.

I have no idea which free agents will be kept. I do know that Nashville doesn’t currently have many open spots. Nick Spaling, Ryan Ellis, Mattias Ekholm and Michael Del Zotto are restricted free agents. Patrick Eaves and Carter Hutton are unrestricted.

With the Predators defense being so young to begin with, I have a hard time thinking the Preds would keep all of the defensemen from Milwaukee who are similar in age and experience. Diaby, Rissling, Vainonen and Noonan need a place to play. Still, I would think Nashville would want an experienced defenseman at the ready in Milwaukee should an injury occur.

I would think Calle Jarnkrok and Taylor Beck are destined for Nashville this fall. Then, there are several others that have a shot: Sissons, Watson, Salomaki and Forsberg. However, because Nashville has few jobs available (at this moment) and the fact those players are on two-way contracts and won’t have to worry about clearing waivers, they could start in Milwaukee next season.

It’s going to be interesting to see who will be back with the Admirals next season.
